Cincinnati Home Inspection: What to Ask Your Inspector
Here in the Tri-State, we encourage home buyers, and home owners getting a seller home inspection completed, to join us for the home inspection. Part of our job as a home inspector is to give you all the information you need and want, and there is no such thing as a dumb question. We do not expect you to walk into an inspection with knowledge of foundations and home repairs. We study these subjects so that you do not need to.
So please ask questions as we go. Cincinnati home inspections yield a lot to talk about. You do not need to research anything before we do our inspection, but here are a few handy questions to keep in mind.
Ask The Home Inspector – Can you show me what that is?
Some of the house’s small elements I reference may be unfamiliar. If I mention some detail and you do not know what it looks like – or what it SHOULD look like – please ask me to point it out so that you can see precisely what we are referring to.
You may be taking measurements – having a tape measure is a good idea – and jotting notes too as we go. I need to be clear about what I am describing, so please ask me to clarify if you have any questions. I try to avoid jargon, but sometimes these objects have very specific names.
Ask The Home Inspector – How is that supposed to work?
Often, what I’m showing you is a piece of equipment that is intended to function in a specific way. If a thermostat or a water heater or an electrical panel is not functioning correctly, it can be helpful to demonstrate what it SHOULD look like. I may be able to show you how it is supposed to operate correctly. If something is wrong or missing (with regards to its appearance), I can explain what I had hoped to see.
The different mechanical systems in a house are mandatory for proper functioning of the home, but they may not be systems you’ve ever had to operate yourself. I may be able to show you their emergency shutoff procedures as well, which are always helpful to know for your safety.
